The Great Tech Shift: From Generalist to Specialist
The notion that the field of B.Sc. CSIT is diminishing is an incorrect viewpoint that does not understand how the tech industry has adapted. Although, the tech industry is not shrinking in terms of job openings, what has changed is that there is a shift in preference.
From Foundation to Specialization
As the core of the situation is hyper-specialization. The B.Sc. CSIT offers a broad foundation. Whereas, a deep foundation is likely required to work in high-demand fields. Such as, cybersecurity, data science, and AI engineering. Because of this, employers looking for specialists will naturally overlook generalists.
A degree is no longer the peak of who you are in terms of academic pursuit; it is only the beginning. The challenge for B.Sc. CSIT graduates is to build on the foundational knowledge they already have in their studies to continue learning and developing their skills through experiential learning. Also, employers care less about your credentials and care more about your skills and project portfolio.
The real value of a B.Sc. CSIT degree is the adaptability that comes with it. Whereas, the breadth of the degree gives you the basic principles of technology that you need to engage with new tools and change technologies/areas of specialization. Also, it sets you up with that basic knowledge to continue on any track with a sound foundation for an ongoing career of improvement, development, and innovation.
In conclusion, the B.Sc. CSIT degree is not an endpoint, it is a strong beginning. Its value is not found in the certificate on the wall, it is the beginning of a career in constant expansion and growth. Instead of perceiving their B.Sc. CSIT degree as an occupation, graduates should perceive it as a form of jet propulsion. By embracing lifelong learning as a conviction of your profession, your degree is a generalist qualification like a master key. As, it can open a specific lock that leads to a myriad of hyper-specialized occupations.
